In 1905, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter spent three months in Tunisia. Side by side during this little-documented trip, they created around 540 works, which are presented in this publication as a visual travel journal. Both were experiencing Arab culture for the first time in Tunisia, where they were fascinated by the alleyways of the medinas, folkish scenes, and Muslim places of worship, the mosques and cemeteries, as well as Arabic scripts and applied arts. This is the first publication devoted entirely to the little-known group of works from their Tunisian stay. Dominique Jarrassé emeritierter Professor für zeitgenössische Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Bordeaux, lehrt an der École du Louvre, Paris. Seine Forschungen erstrecken sich auf die Kunst des Prix de Rome, die Kolonialkunst und die Ethnisierung der Kunstgeschichte. Langjährige Forschungen in Tunesien zum jüdischen Erbe und zur Kunst der Kolonialzeit. Vor Ort identifizierte er die Werke, die Wassily Kandinsky und Gabriele Münter während ihres Aufenthalts 1905 geschaffen hatten.Isabelle Jansen seit 2011 Kuratorin und Geschäftsführerin der Gabriele Münter- und Johannes Eichner-Stiftung. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind der Expressionismus, insbesondere die Kunst von Gabriele Münter sowie die deutsch-französischen Kunstbeziehungen.
