This work consists of a genealogical analysis of the concept of non-contemporaneity (Ungleichzeitigkeit) in Ernst Blochs work from his first writings to its definitive terminological fixation in Heritage of Our Times (1935). It insists that this concept is inseparable from the major intuitions of Blochs philosophy and finds its roots within his ontological approach: being non-contemporaneous to itself, continually seeking itself and in its fruitful quest constantly producing new determinations. The book traces the occurrences of the term non-contemporaneity and attempts to identify its evolution in fields such as philosophy of history, philosophy of art, philosophy of religion, ontology, or Blochs political theory.
