This book intends to demonstrate how characters, in literature and theatre, find resilience in humour and have the power to laugh at even the darkest situations as long as they are able to see the bright side of darkness. Gulliver, Yossarian, Billy Pilgrim, Vladimir, Estragon, Winnie and Willie, Martha and George epitomize, both linguistically and symbolically, the humour that has always existed in tragedy.

Iulia Veronica Neagu is a junior lecturer at the Department of English Language and Literature, "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati, Romania, where she currently teaches English for Specific Purposes. She was awarded the doctor's degree in English stylistics in 2013 for the PhD dissertation Black Humour: A Stylistic Approach.
