Otitis media with effusion is a disease of multifactoral aetiology, with musculoskeletal eustachain tube dysfunction being one possible causative factor of the middle ear effusion. This pilot study demonstrates the effectiveness of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy in clearing the middle ear effusion found in chronic or persistent otitis media, by correcting the musculoskeletal eustachian tube dysfunction.

Dr Philips completed this thesis in 2005 at the University of Johannesburg as part of her undergraduate requirements of the M.Tech Chiropractic. She furthered her studies by completing the Certficate Course in Pediatric Chiropractic through KiroKids in 2010.
