    • Emerging economies like Brazil, China and India are rapidly gaining importance in the value chains of multinational firms. At the same time, these regions are posing serious challenges and offering unprecedented opportunities in terms of environmental and social sustainability. Nonetheless, many firms have so far failed to fully understand how to create a strategic strength by optimally incorporating corporate sustainability into their emerging economy strategies. In particular, firms too often regard corporate sustainability as a defensive public relations issue, instead of focusing on its outstanding potential for generating strategically valuable capabilities. Addressing such shortcomings, this book takes a resource-based perspective to investigate what lies behind firms'' engagement in environmental and social sustainability, and how they can reap distinct capability benefits from sustainable management in emerging economies. The findings are based on one of the most comprehensive studies of environmental and social sustainability in emerging economies to date. As part of an international research project at the WHU a?" Otto Beisheim School of Management, 213 firms in Brazil, China, India, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were surveyed. This unique set of data constitutes the empirical basis for the scientific analysis and managerial recommendations offered in this book. It is directed to academics, managers and consultants who seek to deepen their knowledge on the following issues: - Which efforts are the central elements of environmental and social sustainability in emerging economies - How can firms improve their capabilities by engaging in environmental and social sustainability - What drives firms'' engagement in environmental and social sustainability
