Die Themen, die er behandelt sind nicht nur kontrovers, sondern zum Teil auch schockierend und tragisch. Seine Filme sind vieles, von geliebt, bis gehasst, aber eines sind sie sicherlich nicht: einfach. Die beiden Werke Greenaways, die hier besprochen werden um die Besonderheiten seiner künstlerischen Umsetzungen darzustellen, tragen bereits im Titel einen Hinweis auf die Intermedialität: Der Kontrakt des Zeichners und Rembrandts Nachtwache Geheimnisse eines Gemäldes (Im folgenden nur Rembrandts Nachtwache). In beiden Filmen geht es augenscheinlich um Künstler, der eine erfunden, der andere einer der bedeutendsten Maler der europäischen Kunstgeschichte und das viert-berühmteste Bild der Welt.Beim Kontrakt des Zeichners handelt es sich um Greenaways ersten bekannten Spielfilm, in welchem er erstmals den rein experimentellen Bereich verlässt und das grundlegende Verhältnis von Malerei bzw. Zeichnung und Film erläutert. Rembrandts Nachtwache dagegen, ist sein neuestes und bis heute letztes Werk und wurde als Rückkehr zu Stil und Thematik des Kontrakt des Zeichners angekündigt und auch verstanden. Ob dies der Fall ist und was die Zeitspanne von 25 Jahren zwischen beiden Filmen mit ähnlicher Thematik ausmacht wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt.

- David Hume, philosopher, historian, economist, librarian, and essayist, was one of the great figures of the European Enlightenment. Unlike some of his famous contemporaries, however, he was not dogmatically committed to idealised conceptions of reason, liberty, and progress.
